Why Ryan Giggs Should Never Have Won BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2009

I know I shouldn’t be mean at this time of the year, you know – peace and good will to all men, but what on earth possessed the great British public to vote for Ryan Giggs at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2009 event.

Mark Cavendish

Mark Cavendish - Multiple Stage winner in the Tour de France 2009

There’s a clue in the title as to what should be the minimum requirements for nomination at this prestigous prize giving of recognition. Know what it is? Of course you do… You need a personality. His acceptance said it all, or rather it didn’t say it all – it just showed how lacking in personality he was compared to some of the other nominees.

Those Who Are Not Worthy

I know what’s going through your mind…  No,  I don’t hate Manchester United, and yes – I am a football fan. I must have blinked and missed the recent great achievements and personal sacrifice Mr Giggs has made. Someone who has been shockingly overpaid, under-worked, and treated like someone of importance for the last decade; should not be allowed to share the same stage with some of the other worthy candidates.

You can also forget about Jenson Button – he doesn’t even live in this country – a tax exile no less. He only won the Formula One Grand Prix 2009 Championship because he had a great car and a brilliant team director for most of the season.  Poor guy, he’s had to suffer for all those years, only earning up  to a measly £5 million a year. Just watch how Lewis Hamilton wipes the floor with him next season.

So Who Were the Worthy Nominees?

That’s easy – Mark Cavendish, David Haye, Jessica Ennis and Beth Tweddle.

I can tell you with real certainty who should have won, Mark Cavendish – no question about it. Why? He did rather well in a certain little race called the Tour de France – three weeks of sheer pain.

Disagree… Who should have one then?
