The Perfect New Year’s Resolution
Posted January 6th, 2009 by AdrianHappy New Year to you. I know it’s a little late, but I’ve only just got round to thinking about and committing to my New Year’s resolution. I’ve not chosen anything quite so obvious for 2009. In fact, I’ve steered clear of the usual resolutions most of us consider – but I have chosen something we’re all looking for and once you find it – you’ll want to keep it…
Yes, like you, I thought about cutting down on fatty foods, drinking less, getting fit, taking up Yoga, being kind to strangers, giving up some of my time to do charity work, you know – all very worthy and highly commendable.
Well, if you’re anything like me cutting back on a favourite food or giving up on my preferred tipple is just plain dull. It’s also not sustainable, not for me anyhow. I’ve also pondered about doing some charity work, but which one deserves a chunk of my precious time… hmm, I’m just not sure as there are so many good causes.
Rather than just thinking about the usual resolutions – I believe I’ve found the perfect New Year’s Resolution to incorporate into my life for 2009. Ready? Drum roll please… I’m going to be more optimistic!
Yes, just think about it. Wouldn’t it be great to be an eternal optimist, joining the likes of Bill Clinton and Richard Branson in their quest for happiness. Yes I know, some people who seem to be smiling constantly because life is soooo great get on your nerves sometimes don’t they, but I’m not talking about them. I’m talking about the people who have that ‘spark’ and believe nothing is impossible. That get up and go, ‘can do’ attitude from people who just don’t take no for an answer when us mere mortals are giving up – I want some of that!
The article and book that got me thinking, and hopefully acting on it was something I read in the Times and the book that explains it all is ‘The Optimist: One Man’s Search for the Brighter Side of Life’ – by Laurence Shorter. Go check it out and see if you agree.
