What is the Difference Between Fragrance Oils and Essential Oils?

OK, so you may have heard of fragrance oils and essential oils, you may even have used them, but many people still ask what the main difference is between these oils besides the price. Generally speaking fragrance oils are made from synthetic man-made materials and essential oils are made from the natural extracts of plants… but there is more to it.

Most fragrance oils, also known as aromatic oils or scented oils, are blended synthetic aroma compounds or natural essential oils that are diluted with a carrier like propylene glycol, vegetable oil, or mineral oil. Aromatic oils are used in many industries including perfumery, cosmetics, flavoring of food, home fragrances, and in aromatherapy.

Fragrance oils are also more affordable because of their high synthetic material content which reduces commercial production costs. Totally synthetic fragrance oils shouldn’t be used on the skin and are frequently used around the home for use with pot pourri and fragrance oil burners.
