Ceramic burners are self explanatory but not everyone is familiar with the soapstone material. Essentially soapstone (aka steatite or soaprock - see wikipedia) is derived from a soft metamorphic rock and is commonly used as a carving material. It gets its name from sometimes having a ’soapy’ feel when touched.

When the  soapstone material is used and machine ground into a fragrance oil burner, it is very smooth to the touch and obviously non-porous with regard to keeping the oil within the bowl.
